- During the early period, the coastal plains of northwestern La Union, stretching from the town of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur and in the north to Sudipen, Bangar, Purao (now Luna & Balaoan), and Bacnotan in the south, as well as along the riverbanks of the Amburayan River, served as early settlements of the Samtoys or Ilocanos, who had a rich animistic culture and religion in La Union.
