Sian Llewellyn, in her Classic Rock review, thought the track was a "fuzzed up work of pop rock genius—complete with one of those cut-all-the-instruments-except-the-drums-and-the-vocal clap along moments" adding that "you can already hear its 'a revolution is the solution' chant reverbating through concert halls across the land".
The band members had been sharing ideas over the internet prior to the sessions, and were keen to record them; vocalist Shirley Manson had come up with the song title "Tell Me Where It Hurts" a few years previously, The band completed another three songs during the sessions, including "Betcha" (Vig: "it's fuzzed up"), "Girls Talk Shit" ("pretty cool sounding, lots of fast pizzicato guitars and cellos"), and "All the Good in This Life", which Vig described as "kinda Pink Floyd-y".
In 2013 the Austin Chronicle described the band's live performances as "drowning in a haze of guitar and reverb that can drift through cosmically shifting layers of aggressive punk riffs, fuzzed noise, and scalding jams".
Mojo felt that "the age is clear in the voices of Matt Piucci and Steven Roback, but so is the honesty inside songs that mine lost brothers, opportunities, and time", while Uncut stated that "the best tracks gently slip their moorings, as with the sour fuzzed guitar and damaged lyrics of 'Got the Fear', and hazy warp and alchemical concerns of the insinuatingly addictive 'Green'".
